Walk With Us Again: Fall of 2012

Why We Walk For Farm Animals

The Walk for Farm Animals is a fun, positive way to get involved in supporting Farm Sanctuary and our work to help abused farm animals. Walkers participate for many reasons. Below are just a few of their stories.

Kim Piper

Kim Piper – Pittsburgh, PA

In Pittsburgh, I walk with a couple hundred other people – some vegetarian, some vegan, some omnivores. What we all have in common is compassion for animals and a desire to put an end to cruel factory farming practices. I’ve met so many great people at the event. Last year, in addition to the three-mile walk, they had a lot of great activities for everyone, including kids. After the walk, there was a delicious vegan picnic. It was inspiring, heart-warming, rewarding, and a lot of fun! I thought fundraising might be difficult, but when I told people what I was doing and why it was so important to me, it was easy. Even if someone just donated $5, it still makes a difference. Every bit counts! Plus, fundraising online made it easier to reach out to some of my family and friends who do not live in Pittsburgh. It’s amazing what people can do when we work together. I can’t wait for our Walk this year!

Roger Clarke

Roger Clarke – Vancouver, BC

I joined the Walk for Farm Animals because I believe that all animals have a right to a life free of unnecessary suffering. I'm proud to raise money for Farm Sanctuary because they work to end suffering for farm animals. Aside from fundraising, I think the Walk is important because it's a public event. We get hundreds of people walking in downtown Vancouver, spreading a message of compassion for animals. People get to see lots of normal people, of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages, coming together in support of animals who are suffering because of our food choices. The Walk is an important part of making compassionate choices mainstream.

Jamie Cohen

Jamie Cohen – Baltimore, MD

Farm Sanctuary has been part of my heart since my first visit in 1995. Meeting all of the wonderful animals that have been rescued from cruelty and living out their lives in peace touched me in a way that is hard to describe. Not only does Farm Sanctuary give refuge to farm animals rescued from the horrors of food production, but they work tirelessly educating people on why they should eat a kind diet without animal products. They also work on legislative reforms to help animals who suffer in food production every minute of every day. This takes money, and I walk to raise as much money as I can so that Farm Sanctuary can continue their vital work to stop farm animal cruelty. I consider it an honor to work on the animals' behalf, to tell their important stories, and to raise money in their support.

Richard Adams

Richard Adams – Rochester, NY

Visiting Farm Sanctuary in 2010 changed my life forever. After meeting the smart, loving, and playful animals whose lives could have been carelessly thrown away for needless reasons, I couldn’t just stand by without doing something to help those still trapped on factory farms. I needed a way to speak up for these animals and help them anyway I could. So, now I walk. I walk to raise money that will relieve suffering and save lives. I walk to raise awareness of the issues that many people are unaware of when they sit down to dinner each night. I walk for farm animals, because nothing will change for them unless we help.

Piper Moretti

Piper Moretti – Los Angeles, CA

I believe information comes to you at just the right time in your life. A few years ago I was introduced to Jane Goodall's book Harvest for Hope. Although I had years prior chosen not to eat beef or pork, after reading the book I chose to go vegetarian. Now, after reading Gene's Baur's book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food, I have become vegan. I choose to walk for Farm Sanctuary because of its peaceful and positive message. I've always believed in the concept of being for something instead of against it. Farm Sanctuary is for the welfare and safety of all animals, and so am I.

Cynthia Pfeffer

Cynthia Pfeffer – Chicago, IL

I’m participating in the Walk for Farm Animals because I believe the most beautiful thing you can do is honor every living creature on earth. I’m inspired by this quote from the Dalai Lama: “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” Walking gives me the opportunity to practice compassion and make a difference while raising awareness of the treatment of animals involved in factory farming. Participating in the Walk is a great way to connect with other people who share in your passion of helping animals. The best part is that everyone is welcome no matter what dietary choices they make. We can all help animals through the Walks!
